*UW-Madison faculty and staff may nominate senior students. (A Qualtrics survey link for nominations will be available December, 2023.) Alternately, they may email awards@provost.wisc.edu with nominees’ names and email addresses. Students may not nominate themselves or other students.

DESCRIPTION

These awards recognize two senior students who have made the most effective use of their time at UW-Madison, demonstrating productivity in the classroom and commitment to community. Originally titled the Awards for Initiative and Efficiency, these are among the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate awards at UW-Madison. Established in 1928, the awards continue to be supported by the family of Theodore Herfurth and Teddy Kubly.

AWARD

Two awards of $4,000 are given annually to graduating seniors who have made the most effective use of their time at UW-Madison.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Nomination by UW-Madison faculty or staff
  • Senior standing (will graduate May/August/December of calendar year)
  • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to apply

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Academic achievement and recognition
  • Leadership in extra-curricular activities (includes the creative arts)
  • Financial self-support (employment, scholarships, etc.)
  • Effective communication skills

APPLICATION PROCESS

Must be nominated by UW–Madison faculty or staff. Nominated students will be invited to complete an online application, which includes a resume and short essay. The Herfurth-Kubly Committee will invite 8 -10 finalists to a dinner in early April. Attendance at the dinner is mandatory. At this event candidates will give two short speeches, one prepared and one impromptu.

Student Application: Nominated students apply online through Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH). Log on to Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH). After logging-in and filling out a general application, you will be presented with links to applications for scholarships for which you are eligible, with open application cycles. You may want to check the site frequently to see what new opportunities are available. If you do not see the Herfurth-Kubly application in your list, even though you were nominated and plan to graduate in May, August or December of this calendar year, please contact the UAA Office (awards@provost.wisc.edu, 265-2428).
